Tony Bennett, legendary American crooner, passed away Friday after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 96. To honor his legacy, Chuck Schumer held his normal Sunday press conference in Central Park, at the bench which commemorated the singer’s 95th birthday, just shy of two years ago.

“Tony Bennett personified the American dream…” Schumer says, standing by the impromptu memorial. “… but he is, and always will be, a New Yorker who did so much good.” Bennett, who would have turned 97 on August 3rd, had a career that spanned more than seven decades. While he was known best for his music, he was also a philanthropist and humanitarian, donating his time as well as his money to civil rights causes, Alzheimer’s research, among others.

Schumer announced, for these reasons, he and Senator Nancy Pelosi will be co-sponsoring a bill that marks August 3rd as Tony Bennett Day; a mark of respect for all that the late singer contributed. A draft of the bill can be found online.
