The UN Security Council convened for an emergency meeting Sunday, seeking to address the escalating conflict in the Middle East. In the wake of the conflict between Iran and Israel, the council called for de-escalation, and reminded all present members that the United Nations’ Charter strictly prohibits uses of force against either the territory of or the independence of another nation.

Tensions remain high following Iran’s escalation of force against Israel; Secretary General Guterres condemned the attack, asking that all parties “exercise maximum restraint”. Many of Israel’s allies also condemned the attack, with President Biden issuing a statement that a G7 meeting would also be convened in order to coordinate a “united diplomatic response”.

The situation in the Middle East is uncertain at this time.
